Fighting with a handgun

I thought this years conference was outstanding. I was glad to see Dave Young discuss using the firearm as an impact weapon. I do believe there are circumstances where the handgun/long gun is a viable alternative as an impact weapon.

I mentioned in my lecture on weapon retention out-of-the holster that every position we find ourselves in should be a shooting/fighting position. What are you doing to reinforce this concept?

Very few live fire ranges offer the capability of shooting at targets above the head, and below the feet. One of the "dry" drills I like to practice is simply drawing and simulating engaging a threat on an elevated platform, and drawing and engaging a threat below me. Most ranges are designed as what I call "flat" ranges. You may be able to shoot from the common standing, kneeling, seated, and prone positions. But...What happens when you are approaching a stairwell leading to a second floor and a threat appears. Or maybe you are approaching a stairwell from an elevated position and a threat appears below you. As Christopher Columbus knew, the world is not flat. The gunfight you get involved in may not be as you thought it would be. Train, train, train, and then train some more.
